COMMON MYTHS ABOUT FATTY LIVER
Myth 1) Fatty liver limited only to Alcoholic people.
Fact:- There are two main types of fatty liver disease 1) alcoholic liver disease 2) Non alcoholic liver disease – linked more to diabetes, obesity and high cholesterol
Myth 2) Fatty liver occurs only to overweight people.
Fact:- Lean people can also suffer from fatty liver especially those that have insulin resistance, unhealthy diet and genetic predisposition.
Myth 3) Fatty liver does not harm to body
Fact:- Though fatty liver is reversible but sometimes patient progresses to fibrosis – cirrhosis stage (require liver transplant for survival).
Myth 4) Little alcohol consumption won’t affect liver.
Fact:- Even small amount of alcohol consumption can lead to liver enzymes elevation – inflammation – fatty liver.
Myth 5) Magic pill available to treat fatty liver.
Fact:- Only Saroglitazar is approved in India to treat non alcoholic fatty liver. However it is slow acting medicine. So lifestyle modification and weight reduction is the corner stone of treatment. For alcoholic fatty liver, complete alcohol avoidance.
Myth 6) Completely avoidance of fat to stay away from fatty liver
Fact:- Just stay away from saturated fat and trans fat (unhealthy fat). Unsaturated fat (olive oil, nuts and fish oil) is health fat.
Myth 7) Fatty liver is always due to unhealthy diet.
Fact:- While diet plays big role. But fatty liver can also occur in metabolic dysfunction, genetic predisposition, hormonal imbalance disorders ( PCOS, hypothyroidism).
